    As a Brit, I do find this strange, as Carp are a prized species in Britain, lakes are stocked with them because they are a fantastic fighting fish to catch, especially on lighter gear. I know they are an invasive species but surely you must enjoy catching them? Why not make carp only lakes for those who enjoy fishing for them and make sure the lakes are kept carp only, maybe put caught carp from other lakes into carp only lakes so the fish live on, people can keep catching them and native species aren't out-eaten by them in their lakes?

I have a 2-4kg 7ft graphite rod with a 2500 reel for lure fishing and another fibreglass tip rod, dame size reel for bait fishing. I am thinking of buying another combo for bigger fish, e.g. Snapper, Jewfish, etc from breakealls, the harbour, etc. What would you suggest? Thanks Evan

      Definitely something longer in the 9 to 10 foot range with a 4000 or 5000 size reel. Shimano have a trio of exciting new beach/rock rod ranges launching next month: Exvance, Dynaflare and Reventus. All at quite different price points but each with models that would suit you perfectly. I’d hold off and have a look at those I reckon. 👍

Usually under or around white water. And I'll never forget that school of Mulloway I saw, or the bloke pull two decent Reds from my local boat ramp using an Alvey and mullet strips. It's the joy of land based fishing. When it comes together, it's great. If you noticed, Steve caught one of those Bream. Pretty good effort in the daytime.

    It is interesting that you are targeting black drummer. Some sources say they are present in New Zealand, but I've never heard of anyone catching them or even seen one. We have silver drummer which are common, but universally regarded as disgusting to eat. That said, most people wouldn't eat a luderick/parore either! A lot comes down to preparation.

    • @StarloGetsReel
      @StarloGetsReel День тому

      Yes, I've never heard any reliable accounts of black drummer (Girella elevata) being caught in NZ. They are a very different fish to the silver drummer, and MUCH better to eat... better than parore (blackfish), too. I'd give silver drummer a 2 out of 10 as a table fish, parore a 6 out of 10, and black drummer at least an 8... but everyone's opinions (and tastes) are different.

    What’s in a name eh? 🤷‍♂️ Damn I must be getting old Steve. Back when I went to Tassie for the first time in 1982 I believe, Noel Jetson who owned the post office in Cressy, ran “Red Tag Trout Tours”. He passed not long after that from memory. Cressy of course being right on the door step of the famous “Brumbies run” just out of Cressy. We were hosted by the Spencer Family who owned the farm “Woolmore” whose entrance gate was opposite Brumbies Run. They were relatives of Jan Spencer who was very well known in Tassie trout fishing circles at the time. The family had a trout shack on Lake Sorrel from memory. Fantastic place Tassie. I went back later in the 90’s and fished Great Lake etc. Still have very fond memories of the place and the people. It was a bloody long haul from here in Sandgroper land. Glad to see it still producing great trout fishing. Thanks for the memories Steve. “Trouty”. 😉👍

      @666Havers And that snapper was on a solid glass Jarvis Walker Clarence, a light 7ft rod matched with a 4" side cast and 12lb line. I'd bought that when I was about ten years old, and it left with me on my travels around Australia, in 1975. It had probably caught fish in every state before it was relegated.

    Ah, the memories. Trying to fish with a cungy bait in close, every.single.cast. in some places. And so many gut hooked. That was my boyhood on the NSW rocks, now I'm in WA and we don't have them. 😊

    I remember snorkelling and being astounded by how many there were. Every few metres there was one or two of varying size.

    I've had them swallow size 4 hooks chasing snapper in the wash

      I'm guessing you mean 4/0, and I believe it! Voracious critters...

      Yes... Tom sold out in 36 hours! We certainly didn't expect that! More coming... hang in there.

    Ive tried to buy these twice from Amazon over the last few years, but have had customs seize them both times. Glad they're available now

      That one's a very old Shimano "Match" style coarse fishing rod from Europe.
